April 8, 1850
Brig L'Essai carrying brandy.
"The brig L'Essai, sailing from Rochelle, France, laden with brandy, anchored off Strawberry Hill in the howling storm of April 8, 1850. Notice was sent from Hull of the vessel's predicament, and well-known Boston towboat R.B. Forbes churned to her aid. Misfortune again struck, for while running out lines, L'Essai dragged and went aground on the beach. The masts were cut away to keep her from heeling over, and she fell around toward the wind. A lifeboat was unable to reach her to render assistance."
